Nomination Information

Eligibility:

The National Awards are open to citizens and legal residents of the United States, as well as American organizations, companies, communities and schools.

Entry Schedule:

Nominations must be submitted to the foundation no later than June 1st.

Entry Format:

Submit scrapbook, ring binder, photo album, video or CD-ROM of substantiating material. Include items such as news clippings, photos, letters of commendation, programs, etc. Please note: a one-page summary must be included with the entry stating why it should be selected for a Freedoms Foundation National Award.

Entry Specification:

Limit one book per entry. Only one video or CD-ROM may be submitted. Entries should be secured in either a scrapbook, binder, notebook or photo album.

Selection Process:

Awards selections are determined in accordance with established procedures by a distinguished, independent National Awards jury of state Supreme Court justices, officers from national patriotic, service and civic clubs, veterans and educational organizations. The jury is instructed to review the one-page summary and look favorably on current programs and projects.

Awards:

Recipients receive the George Washington Honor Medal. In the Military Essay category, recipients also receive a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. In the Youth Essay Category, the meritorious recipient receives a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

Award Announcement:

Recipients will be notified in the fall. Ceremonies honoring the recipients are conducted nationwide by Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge volunteer chapters.

Categories:

Entries should focus on the themes of patriotism, responsible citizenship, values and community involvement.

Community Entry:

For programs and individuals who “go above and beyond the call of duty” on a local, regional or national level projects or efforts that continue at least one year and preferably longer. We are looking for those who are serving their communities on a day-to-day basis.

Military Essay:

Sponsored by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Department of Pennsylvania. Open to personnel of the Armed Forces on active or reserve duty and members of the National Guard, ROTC and JROTC components. Typed essays should to 500 to 1,000 words in length. Entry must include name, rank, social security number, service designation, military address, permanent home address, phone number, plus name and address of commanding officer. JROTC entries must also include name and address of military instructor. Please indicate youth or adult on entry form. Please note: Only one entry per person.
2007 Topic: The Continual Fight For Freedom

National Awards jury

Schools Entry:

Portfolio entries for activities by a school or school system. Focus should be placed on students’ community involvement efforts as well as emphasis on patriotism and responsible citizenship in action. Evidence of student involvement must be included. Attach a complete one-page summary of the project or program showing objectives, procedures, groups involved and dates of activities.

Youth Essay/Speech:

Sponsored by the Women’s Overseas Service League. Entries should be an essay or speech typed with 500-1,000 words and must include youth’s name, home address, age, social security number and grade. Essay/Speech must also respond to the topic.
2007 Topic: What It Means To Be An American

Public Communications:

Awards are made to those who have made an impact on a local, regional or national level with a dynamic address, sermon, editorial, book, television and radio program etc… These entries must promote an increase in the understanding of the “American Way of Life.”

Special Events:

Awards are made to events which have made an impact on a local, regional or national level. These events promote the American Way of Life and an increase in the understanding of our American Heritage. Examples include ceremonies, parades, concerts, etc…
